SELECTION
Choose
geraniums by color and growth habit, either upright or hanging.
Pick healthy plants, full & bushy, with visible flower buds.
SOIL
Grow
plants in soil that is porous enough to provide good drainage. In
the garden, the plant beds should be cultivated, and organic matter
added, mixed & leveled before planting. Improve soil by adding composted
cow manure, Complete Planting Mix, or peat moss to the top 4-6"
of topsoil. Fertilizers such as 10-10-10 or 5-10-5 may be worked
into the soil or added as a light top dressing. For potted plants
use a good potting soil mix that contains peat and has good drainage.
PLANTING
/ SITING
Plant
geraniums at the same depth they were growing in the original container.
Geraniums grow and bear flowers best if sited in full sun, that
is, 6 hours a day of direct sunlight. Plant geraniums outside only
after danger of frost is past, usually around Memorial Day. Space
them about 18" apart.
WATERING
Water
when the soil surface is dry and before plants wilt. Potted plants
will dry out more quickly than plants in the ground; a product such
as Soil Moist can help retain soil moisture in pots. Water in very
well when first planting, and maintain moisture after that. Even
watering will prevent oedema in leaves.
FEEDING
To
maintain good growth apply a soluble fertilizer such as Peters Blossom
Booster or Miracle - Gro every 2-3 weeks. A slow release fertilizer
such as Osmocote is also good. Follow manufacturers directions.
MAINTENANCE
Geraniums
should be dead-headed regularly to promote continued flowering.
Grasp the flower stem close to the main stem and snap off entire
flower stem. Avoid leaving part stems behind as they can rot and
ruin your plant. Use the same method to remove yellow or dead leaves.
Keeping the plant clean will not only look better but helps prevent
disease and insect infestation.
PEST
CONTROL
Inspect
plants regularly for pests and diseases. Treat as soon as a problem
becomes evident. A systemic insecticide such as Bonide Systemic
Granules can help prevent insect problems. Ortho Rose & Flower spray
and Bayer Advanced Garden Rose & Flower Insect killer work well
for most insect problems. Clean plants have less problems- deadhead
and keep weeded.
