SELECTION
Annuals in baskets, as in the garden, do best under specific environmental
conditions. Choose a species suited to your conditions, whether
it be full sun, part sun/shade or full shade. Keep in mind other
conditions, such as wind, overhangs, & accessibility. Ask our staff
for assistance in choosing an appropriate variety.
WATERING
Most people do not water frequently enough. Baskets contain big
plants with small root volumes. Large plants in sunny or windy locations
may need water one or more times per day. The smaller the basket
volume, the more difficult watering can become. Ten inch hanging
baskets are easier to manage outdoors. Check water daily.
FERTILIZATION
Because of the limited root volume and large plant size, baskets
run out of fertilizer fast. When the fertilizers depleted, plants
stop growing and flowering slows or stops. Hanging baskets must
be fed regularly, every 7 to 14 days. We recommend Peters Blossom
Booster, Miracle Gro Bloom Booster, or Osmocote slow release plant
food.
ABANDONMENT
While you are away on vacation your well-cared-for basket can go
downhill or die in a short time. Perhaps a neighbor will water the
basket while you're away. If this isn't possible place the basket
in a protected spot on the north side of the house, or under the
heavy shade of a tree. Baskets should always be watered thoroughly
before leaving.
