Newfane Greenhouse The following chart will help you care for your lawn. Your lawn will be healthy if the soil is kept healthy . This means you should have the soil pH tested every few years, check and remove excess thatch, fertilize in spring and fall , water deeply during summer, mow the grass at 2-2 1/2" height, and control pests only when necessary.

WHY FERTILIZE IN THE FALL?
It's far better to fertilize in fall or late fall- (September- November)- because seeding grass then places primary emphasis on root growth, and helps to develop "tillers" new offshoots which thicken the turf. In the bright, cooler days of fall no more upright growth takes place and the nutrients of the fertilizer go into strengthening the grass root systems and increasing reserves of nourishment. Feeding the lawn in spring or summer promotes very rapid upright growth which makes for extra mowing. Furthermore, the grass tends to grow at a faster rate than it can build up reserve nutrients and the lawn goes into the stress period of blazing summer in a weakened condition. Fertilizing always promotes greening, but fall fertilizer helps retain the green color well into the winter and encourages a welcome early greening in spring. We recommend Greenview Winter Green for fall feeding.

SEASON THINGS TO DO
Late March Rake lawn to remove debris.
Early April Dethatch if necessary; wait until fall if possible.
Lime if indicated by pH soil test.

(May be applied up until two weeks after the forsythia finish blooming).

You may also use Milky Spore for grubs and that can be applied anytime the ground is not frozen.

June Spot treat broadleaf weeds as seen.
July/August Mow and water as needed. Apply grub control.
